As more businesses are beginning to go online, it is important that you as a business owner have the right tools to help your business adapt too.
One of the most important tool is Social Media, and how you can use it to get customers through paid advertising.

I am going to show you how to run paid advertising using Facebook, right from your mobile phone.
To get the best results with advertising, you need to have a marketing process and a marketing budget.
With that said, let’s jump right in:
To get started with Facebook ads you will need these trio:
- Facebook Account
- Facebook Ad Account
- Facebook Page
If you do not already have a Facebook account, sign up here. When you create a Facebook account, it automatically comes with a Facebook ad account.
Create a Facebook page here. If you are using Instagram for your business, you have to connect your Instagram to your Facebook page.
Go to your Instagram app, open your business account, head over to Edit Profile, Under the Public Business Information, go to Page
You can then connect your existing Facebook page, disconnect a wrong page or create a new Facebook business page.
Install the Facebook Ads Manager App.
After your Facebook trio is set, head over to your mobile app store and download the Facebook Ads Manager App.
Install and login to the app using your Facebook Credentials.
If you already have the Facebook Mobile App on your phone, you can login using your Facebook.
Select your Facebook Page
If you are an admin of several business page, you may need to select the page you wish to advertise on.
Click on the dropdown arrow, where you have all pages, then select your choice
Next, You create your advert
When starting your advert, you will need 3 things ready:
- Your Advert Image or Video
- Your Advert Caption
- A Planned Marketing Process
Proceed to click on create ad
Facebook presents you with 8 marketing objectives:
- Post Engagement
- Video Views
- Website Traffic
- Website Conversion
- Page Likes
- Event Responses
When deciding which one to use, make sure to pick the one that accurately fits your goal at the moment.
What’s your Marketing Objective?
The Post Engagement is used for promoting Facebook or Instagram post.
You should use it if your goal is to make people like your post, and make comments on them.
The Video Views is similar to the post-engagement,
you should use it only when you just want people to see your video.
Website Traffic is the most used objective. It is good for both product and service business.
If you have a website that can automate selling for you, then you just need to send a lot of people there. You can also send traffic to your WhatsApp group using this objective.
The Reach is for showing your advert to the highest number of people possible. It is best for just awareness.
Website conversion is the most expensive and advanced advertising objective.
Use it when you have a website and a large budget to spend.
The Messages is similar to the website-traffic objective.
Use it when you want your potential customer to message you directly on WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram direct message.
The Page Likes is for getting fans on Facebook. It doesn’t work for Instagram followers and it does not translate to sales.
If you want social proof on Facebook, you can consider using this option to get more page likes.
The Event Response is for promoting Facebook events. You can use it if you have an online event to host.
Personally, I use the website traffic and messages objective for generating sales.
If you are comfortable chatting with people one on one, use the messages objective, If not, use the website traffic.
Choose Website Traffic Advert
The ideas behind this objective is the value in numbers.
For instance, if you have 1000 whatsapp contacts and made 10 sales from there weekly, then you should be able to make 100 sales if you have 10000 people seeing your products.
Running a website traffic advert means you need a website. You can run your advert to your product page on Jumia, Konga, Jiji, Whatsapp Group or Direct chat
Select Ad Format
There are 4 ways to format your advert with the Website traffic advert
- Single Image
- Single Video
Choose the option that suits your business. You can as well try all the options to compare which works better. I am using the single image ad format.
When selecting your ad image, you want to pick an image that will stop a customer from scrolling away.
It is preferable to use images without text on it. However, if you must use an image with text, make sure it is just about 1/3 of the whole image.
When you are ok with the selected picture, tap the forward arrow icon to proceed
Input your Ad Content
This is the creative part of the advert. You need to catch your target attention effortlessly.
Give a very brief description of your product, service or offer on the primary text.
For ecommerce products, I will make it short and simple. The headline should contain a direct message as well.
For the website, I created a customised web link to direct people to chat me on whatsapp. You can make your own links here.
When choosing a Call to Action button, pick what applies in your business process.
Placements refers to where you want your adverts to be shown
When you choose automatic placement, it means facebook will decide where your advert shows, based on how much you are spending, your audience and your ad format.
With the manual option, you can decide where you want to show your adverts
you can decide to show it on only mobile devices
you can decide to show your advert on only Facebook News feed. If you have a very limited budget, don’t show your adverts to multiple platforms.d.
Once you are satisfied with your selection, tap the arrow, to proceed to your audience selection.
Create your Audience
If you are not new to your business, then you should have a very good idea of who your target customers are
Click on the Create New Audience
Rename the audience set, move the slider to select the age group and choose which gender to show your adverts to
Click on include location, to select which state or city you want you advert to show. Always select city, it gives a more detailed audience.
For detailed targeting, click on include people who match
Here you have the opportunity to explore the interest, behaviour and demographics of your audience up to the most relevant point. Spend time to go through all the options, as you may see what exactly describe your target customers.
You can also search for your audience interest. Once you see what fits, click on the Plus sign to add to you audience list.
You can Narrow audience if you want your target to be more detailed and fit into more than one interest, behaviour or demographic
At the bottom of the page you will see the total number of people you are potentially going to meet. Try to meet the 1million mark, between 700k to 1.2mil people is good.
Once you are done, mark to save all and proceed to the next page
Budget and Schedule
When setting you budget, its best you calculate in dollars and use the naira equivalent. Suggested minimum spend per day is $10 an equivalent of about N5000.
Set you Advert to run per day and continuosly. On the day your ad budget finishes, pause the advert. This is so your gathered data wont have to start again with a new advert.
Once you are done, tap the mark icon to submit your advert for preview. If you have money in your account, when you ad is approved, it will immediately start running.
If you have your payment connected, the option to add payment will show up. Make sure your Location and currency is set to Lagos and Naira.
If you have the options of PAYU or Local Card, then you can make payment with any of your bank ATM Card. This option lets your deposit money into your facebook ad wallet.
If you dont have any of the option above, then you will need a dollar card or naira card of a bank that sells dollar to its customers. UBA and Zenith bank works best.
If you are skeptical about using your ATM Card online, then open a barter account to create a virtual dollar card.

You will have to create a new ad account.
1. On the current ad account, update your business information and currency to naira, then it will automatically create a new naira ad account.
2. Create a new business account, go to business.facebook.com to get started. You will be able to create a new business ad account in naira.
